Early Staved Firkin in Original Apple Green Paint
Here is an exceptionally fine early American staved firkin of small size, c. 1800 -1850. It measures approx. 8 & 1/4 inches high, not counting the swing handle, and approx. 8 & 1/2 inches wide at the bottom, and approx. 7 inches wide at the top. It is in all original, undisturbed condition, with no damage or repairs, save an old age crack and chip to the top. The sides, top, and bottom are pine, and the hoops are ash or oak. It retains it's original paint---the best kind of dry old apple green/ greenish blue. The swing handle is nicely shaped, and the hoops are also decoratively shaped. The bottom hoop is exceptionally interesting, with a split terminal which flairs out at the end, and is precisely attached with three nails---very unusual!
This old firkin is the product of a very artistic and accomplished maker. The small size, great color, and design make it special.
