Antique Miniature Furniture by Samuel Hersey, Hingham, Mass.
Here is a group of miniature antique furniture made by the Hersey's of Hingham, Mass. I purchased these pieces directly from an early homestead in Hingham Mass., about 25 years ago. They have never been through an auction or in the hands of an another antique dealer, they are totally fresh to the market.
There are five pieces; a one drawer stand, a card table, a drop leaf table, a mahogany center table, and a small bench. They are all in original, as found condition. A detailed description of each piece follows, along with dimensions.
The one drawer stand: Measures just under 5 & 1/2 inches tall by 2 & 3/4 inches wide by just over 2 & 1/2 inches deep. It is in excellent, near mint condition, all original, with no damage, repairs or restorations of any kind. It is beautifully made, neat as a pin, with a delicately shaped backsplash and front skirt. The sides of the backsplash are also delicately chamfered, as is the inside edge of the drawer. It has the original knob on the drawer, and still retains the original label inside the drawer. It is an absolute gem!
The card table: Measures approx. 4 & 1/4 inches high by 5 &1/4 inches wide by 2 & 1/2 inches deep. It is made of pine, with mahogany accents. The curled under scroll feet have mahogany tips, and one tip has fallen off and been re-glued. There are delicately chamfered pieces on the top and bottom of the column, which are also made of mahogany. The leaf is detached, as the original leather hinges are present but have split, and there is some darkening to the wood from the nails. When the top is turned around to open it, a faint shadow from the original label can be seen.
The drop leaf table: measures approx. 4 inches tall by 6 inches long by 3 inches wide when closed. It is made entirely of pine. The leaves are detached, as little leather hinges have dried out and split, just like on the card table. There is an old repair to the top of one leg, rather clumsily done---it could be improved. It has swing out supports for the leaves.
The Mahogany center table: Measures approx. 4 inches tall, the octagonal top is 3 & 3/4's inches in diameter. It is made entirely of mahogany, and is in excellent, all original condition, with no repairs or restorations. It retains the original deep brown patina, and there is a pencil inscription on the top, but I can't tell what it says.
The last piece is a primitive little bucket bench, that measures approx. 1 & 1/2 inches tall by 3 inches long by 1 73/4's inches deep. It is all pine, with square legs and a medial stretcher. It is more simply made than the other pieces, and would look great paired with some miniature Hingham woodenware.
I am selling the whole collection of five pieces for one price.
