Vintage Halloween Jack-o-lanterns ~ One Tiny!
Here are two very nice antique Jack-o-lanterns, which date anywhere from the early 1900's to the late 1920's. The first measures approx. 3 inches tall, with a diameter of approx. 4 inches. The second is very, very small---certainly the smallest I have ever seen--- measuring just 2 inches wide by a mere 1 & 3/4's inches tall---about the size of a golf ball. They are both in as found, unrestored condition, with no repairs or restorations.
They are probably German, made of a dense, plaster like paper mache, thickly painted. They both retain the original green paper 'pumpkin patch' leaves on the bases. The eyes, nose and mouth on each still retain the original paper inserts. The inserts are in perfect shape, with the exception of the nose on the larger, which although complete, has some cracks in the paper. They also both have their original wire bail handles.
The larger one has some hairline age cracks from shrinkage, a characteristic inherent in the material, and not due to any damage or impact. One is at the corner of the mouth, and the others are along the side seams where the two halves are joined. It is a lighter color orange, and both show signs that long ago they were illuminated with candles, making one cringe at the potential fire hazard!
All in all, the condition is excellent, all original, and unrestored.
If you like to collect early Halloween stuff, these are both excellent examples, and the small one is particularly rare. I am selling both together, for one price.
