American Circa 1800 Paint Decorated Oilcloth Document Box
Here is an exceptionally nice antique document box, American, c. 1800. It measures approx. 12 inches wide by 5 & 1/2 inches tall by 8 inches deep. It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no repairs or restorations of any kind. It is covered in the original paint decorated oil cloth, having a pointillist design done in red and yellow on a black background.
It bears the original lock, hasp, and brass bail handle on top. The box itself is pine, constructed with hand wrought nails, especially evident in the lock and hasp. Even the decorative leather fringe all around the lid is intact, making this box one of the most perfect examples to be found!
The inside has the original wallpaper lining, and bears a charming Granny note which reads: "One hundred and nineteen years old. Given to the late Lewis Smith of Sharon Mass. in 1809."
Guaranteed to be one of the most brightly colored and perfectly preserved document boxes of this type that you will ever see!
