19th Century American Carved Wooden Pastry Wheel or Rolling Pin
Here is an exceptionally nice example of a carved wooden pastry wheel or rolling pin, American, 19th century. It measures approx. 11 inches in total length, with the carved wheel measuring just under 4 inches long and 2 & 1/2 inches in diameter. It is made of hardwood, it looks like cherry or maple to me.
The carving is surprisingly detailed and fanciful, with twelve panels, representing everything from dancing bears to monkeys, birds, and cats! It has a wonderful dry and deep mellow old patina, having never been oiled, waxed or refinished in any way. I can find no signature or date on it. This is an exceptionally fine example of early American treen ware in great condition, sure to please even the most advanced collector.
