Sterling Silver Grand Tour Sugar Bowl Rome Christmas 1886
Here is a beautiful antique sterling silver sugar bowl, that measures approx. 4 & 1/4 inches tall, and weighs approx. 204 grams, or 6.5 troy ounces. It is in excellent condition, with no repairs or restorations, and has a nice mellow old patina. There are traces of maker's touch marks on the bottom, but they've been obscured by a later inscription. Although not marked, I had it tested, and it is indeed sterling.
The way it is fashioned makes me think that it may be much older than the date on the inscription. It seems to be more 18th century in style than late 19th to me, but I'm not sure. In any event, it is all handmade, with beautiful repose foliage, applied feet, and beautiful applied mask handles. The inscription on the bottom reads:
"E.E.S. from H.K.M.~~~ Rome, X-Mas 1886."
One side of the bowl is also monogrammed with recipient's initials E.E.S. This came to me from an estate where I discovered other Grand Tour items, but I was unable to identify who these initials belonged to. This little sterling bowl may very well have been an antique when it was given back in 1886.
All in all a very beautiful and charming keepsake from a special Christmas of long ago! (I wouldn't mind spending a Christmas in Rome myself!)
