Grand Tour Romulus & Remus Figure Bronze Statue
Here is a small Grand Tour statue of Romulus & Remus, that measures approx. 5 inches long by 4 & 1/2 inches tall, overall. The figure itself is made of bronze or patinated brass, and the base is a solid chunk of green marble, rough on the sides and polished on top to reveal the grain and color of the marble.
It is in very good condition, with no repairs or replacements. It is rather dusty and dirty, and might benefit from a careful cleaning. It dates from the late 19th century, and illustrates the myth of the she wolf suckling the abandoned infant twins, one of whom was to found Rome......you know the story!
The figure has two pins on the bottom which fit into corresponding holes on top, holding it in place. It is easily removed to reveal the underside of the figure, showing three hand cut lug nuts which fasten the sculpture to it's base.
The green marble is most interesting, very heavy and deeply patinated, with the feel of an ancient architectural fragment, perhaps part of the rubble of ancient Rome. The polished top reveals an interesting and colorful grain to the stone.
All in all a very nice Grand Tour piece, that would compliment any collection. I found a few more old Grand Tour pieces---please check the rest of my website.....Thanks!~~~
